The benefits of Smart Parking are a step closer for Canberrans with the ACT Government commencing consultation with industry on the Smart Parking trial. Smart Parking is a system that is able to capture real time information on available parking spots by using technology such as in-ground sensors. Using smart phone apps and intelligent traffic signs, smart parking systems then guide people to an available parking space. This is turn saves drivers time, reduces traffic congestion and provides a better overall user experience. The ACT Government has released its draft Statement of Requirements to ensure that the Smart Parking trial takes into account advice from industry on technology and opportunities for innovation. The procurement process will commence in June 2015, with the trial commencing in the first quarter of 2016. I am also pleased to announce that the ACT Government has engaged National ICT Australia Pty Ltd. (NICTA) as a Strategic Advisor for the Smart Parking trial. NICTA is Australia’s information and communication technology centre of excellence and a key partner in the ACT Government’s drive to establish Canberra as a smart city and centre for research and innovation. NICTA will play a significant role in this project through the design of the smart parking trial, which will help to ensure a positive outcome for the project. Public consultation for the Smart Parking – transforming parking in the ACT discussion paper closed on 6 March 2015 and all feedback received will be considered throughout the trial design process. Feedback received reflected strong support for the trial. Investments in areas of digital advancement such as smart parking technology are about enhancing our city centres and making it easier for Canberrans and visitors alike to drive around the Territory and to engage with government services. Further information on the draft Statement of Requirements will be available from 9 May 2015 at www.procurement.act.gov.au/tenders/open_tenders. The consultation period closes 22 May 2015.- Statement ends -
