Today I was joined by other ACT MLAs at the front of the Legislative Assembly to show our support for the Mother’s Day Classic fun run for breast cancer research. Together we each left a tribute card on a wall of remembrance for those affected by breast cancer. This year a 5 metre wall of remembrance featuring dozens of tribute cards written by Canberrans is on display in the exhibition space on level 1 of the Legislative Assembly. Members of the public are encouraged to come along to leave a tribute card and consider participating in the Mother’s Day Classic this weekend. The annual Mothers Day Classic is a five or 10 kilometre running or walking event held annually. More than 6000 Canberrans are expected to participate in this year’s event on Sunday 10 May, making it the city’s biggest Mother’s Day event and largest charity fun run/walk. Breast cancer has touched the lives of many Canberrans and today it was an honour to be joined by the family and friends of Canberra Mother’s Day Classic 2014 Community Ambassador Amy Hickman who died of advanced breast cancer in September 2014. Breast cancer research is key to overcoming this devastating disease and I encourage all Canberrans to get behind the Mother’s Day Classic to help raise funds. Canberra Mother’s Day Classic chair, Cate Wood, said this event is not only a fundraiser but a way to pay tribute to the one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer, and to remember those we have lost. "Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer. The Mother’s Day Classic is a wonderful way for the community to come together each year to show our support, and to raise money for important research," Ms Wood said.
