The University of Canberra (UC) is set to attract a billion dollars of investment in the ACT following the approval of a Territory Plan variation to provide greater flexibility for the institution in the development of the campus. The decision continues collaboration between the UC and the ACT Government which will ensure job creation and growth in Belconnen over the coming years. By ensuring our major employers such as the University of Canberra remain competitive, we are assisting the diversification of Canberra’s job market, securing Canberra’s position as Australia’s education and knowledge capital. I am also confident that this development will see the continual growth of the University of Canberra – attracting top students from around the world. This development will be a great outcome for the Belconnen community, bringing new jobs and investment. Importantly this will attract organisations that might not otherwise come to the area, but are attracted to a unique opportunity on a university campus. The local Tertiary sector currently adds $2.75 billion to our economy each year and support almost 16,000 jobs, making Canberra is one of the world’s top student cities. Minister for Planning Mick Gentleman was pleased to be able to facilitate this proposal and is looking forward to seeing the University’s master plan come to life over the coming years through development at the site. “The changes allow the UC to draw national and international investment into the region, and encourage domino effects like an increased demand for goods and services across the ACT. “Safe guards for the community will continue for any proposed development with a development application still required,” Minister Gentleman concluded. The community will be able to comment on specific developments within the University precinct, once development applications are lodged via www.planning.act.gov.au
