Growing Canberra’s profile as a tertiary education and tourism destination in one of the world’s biggest markets will be the aim of an ACT Government delegation to India next week.

India is currently our second largest international student market, supporting the growth of the Territory’s tertiary education sector. The growth of this sector is important to the continued diversification of the ACT’s economy by creating more jobs for more Canberrans and supporting our profile overseas.

I am delighted that new Yerrabi MLA Deepak Raj Gupta, who is the first person born in India to be elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly, will join the delegation. The University of Canberra and the University of New South Wales Canberra will also participate in the delegation.

The delegation will meet with representatives from the Indian Government to understand the proposed changes to India’s education policy and to identify the student selection process and courses that would address the skills gaps in India and Australia.

As part of the delegation, the University of Canberra will sign several Memorandums of Understanding with their partner colleges in Mumbai.

India is Canberra’s fourth international source market for tourism, and the delegation will explore opportunities to further grow the number of visiting tourists to the nation’s capital. This includes meetings with Vistara Airlines in Delhi along with Tourism Australia, tourism industry partners, and Singapore Airlines in Mumbai.

The cost of the Chief Minister’s, Deepak Raj Gupta’s and one staff members participation in the delegation is approximately $35,000. The final cost will be released as part of the regular travel reports.
