Joint media release: Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA and Gordon Ramsay MLA

The ACT Government wholly endorses the National Apology delivered by the Prime Minister today, acknowledging and apologising for the grave abuses that have been committed against victims and survivors of institutional child sexual abuse and their families.

Today’s apology has provided an important opportunity for Canberrans to pause and reflect on the profound and devastating impacts of child sexual abuse, and the actions underway to prevent, as far as possible, such abuse recurring now and into the future.

As a provider of services to children and a maker of public policy, the ACT Government acknowledges its responsibility to ensure that children are properly cared for, and to protect them from violence, abuse and neglect by institutions who look after them.

We have committed to addressing each and every recommendation from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Today’s National Apology and the ACT’s ongoing work to implement the Royal Commission’s recommendations may bring up strong feelings and questions. Be assured you are not alone, and that there are many services and support groups available to assist.

Some options for advice and support include 1800 Respect, Lifeline on 13 11 14 and the National Redress Information Line on 1800 146 713.
