An author, public education advocate, fashion retailer, social justice and inclusion campaigner, heritage promoter and a group supporting newly arrived refugees have today been recognised on the ACT Honour Walk in Civic.

The Honour Walk is an enduring recognition of the individuals and groups who have made a sustained contribution to the ACT.

I was pleased to officially recognise the wide-ranging efforts made by this year’s inductees by adding their plaques to the Honour Walk on Ainslie Place.

Joan Kellett OAM was an advocate for public education and a strong supporter of swimming education and participation.

Alan Foskett OAM has a passion for Canberra’s history, highlighted by the 36 historical works he has published about our city.

Professor Tom Calma AO has dedicated his life to improving the lives of Australians, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Dawn Waterhouse has had an influence on the history, heritage and community life of Canberra for more than 90 years, particularly through her former home, Calthorpe’s House.

The late John Hanna was a passionate and colourful character who kept Canberrans looking sharp and pushed the boundaries of local fashion.

Canberra Refugee Support has provided the best possible start for refugees and asylum seekers in Canberra for nearly twenty years and provides stability to many families who are denied in their country of origin.

Any person or group who has played a leading role in shaping the city of Canberra is eligible for recognition on the ACT Honour Walk. Nominations are open year round at cmtedd.act.gov.au/communication/act-honour-walk
