Minister Barr: CBR’s top minds urged to nominate for Scientist of the Year Award

Local emerging scientists are encouraged to nominate for the 2018 ACT Scientist of the Year Award.
The ACT is the education capital of Australia, and the home to many of the nation’s leading tertiary education and research institutions. Research and innovation plays an important role in shaping how we move into the future, and the ACT Government is committed to recognising our up and coming scientists in the Canberra community.
Nominations are now open for all scientists who completed their PhD in the last ten years and are working in the ACT for the Awards. The Award is open to people working in basic or applied research in all fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM), with the Government providing $30,000 in prize money.
Canberra has been the centre of many scientific achievements over the years, ranging from space exploration at Honey Suckle creek, to the invention of aerogard right here in the territory. It is important that as a government we continue to acknowledge the achievements of those scientists that work to benefit our community.
The 2017 ACT Scientist of the Year, Dr Kai Xun Chan was recognised for his research which looks at the effect of drought conditions on plants, and the ability of some plants to sense drought stress.
“Receiving the award opened so many doors for me, not just in science, but also in getting an increased appreciation for connecting with the community, particularly through schools,” Dr Chan said.
“I have a better understanding of the challenges teachers’ face in inspiring students to pursue a career in science and how early career scientists, like myself, can support them and encourage more students into a career in STEM.
“Winning this award also serves as an inspiration to young scientists to know that there are steps in our careers where we can be recognised early on for the kind of work we do. And be celebrated for the passion and hard work we put into addressing the issues we’re curious about,” Dr Chan said.

The 2018 ACT Scientist of the Year will be announced in August.
