Today we officially unveiled Canberra’s first light rail vehicle (LRV), which will service stage one of the city wide light rail network which is currently under construction.

It is another milestone on this transformative project for our city. As construction work continues on stage one of the network, the Government is already planning for stage two – linking Gungahlin and the city to the Woden town centre. We are also investing in more rapid bus routes across the city to develop a truly integrated public transport network.

Our city continues to grow by 6,000 people a year, and we must make the right investments now to ensure our city does not become gridlocked like Sydney and Melbourne.

This is the first vehicle in a staged delivery program that will see 14 LRVs arriving in Canberra over the coming months.

The construction of a city-wide light rail network was both a Labor Election Commitment and part of the ACT Greens and ACT Labor Parliamentary Agreement.

Minister Fitzharris said the LRVs are state of the art and easily accessible, and have been designed to offer patrons a unique travelling experience.

“The vehicle will carry 207 passengers, including 12 priority seats and two wheelchair spaces. It will be equipped with on-board Wi-Fi as well as air conditioning and bicycle storage, making it an accessible, practical and comfortable transport solution,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“This is a really exciting moment in our city’s history and I look forward to seeing the vehicle travel along the stage one corridor.

“I also thank those involved in the transportation of the LRV who ensured it was conducted in a safe and secure manner.”
