A significant milestone has been reached on the first stage of Canberra’s light rail network with the first tracks laid.

The light rail network will transform public transport in our city, integrating seamlessly with buses and making commuting easier.

Stage one of light rail is part of the improved public transport system we are building to manage Canberra’s growth, reduce congestion and protect our liveability.

The people of Canberra have made their support for this project clear in two elections, and the Government is been getting on with the job of delivering light rail.

Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris said that the laying of the track is a sign of the construction progress.

“Laying the first tracks is a very significant moment in any rail project,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Light Rail in Canberra offers an exciting opportunity to transform our city. It will deliver a truly integrated transport network that provides convenient, efficient, affordable and reliable options for Canberrans and visitors to move around the city.”

Work towards Stage 2 of the network, which will go to Woden in line with the government’s 2016 election commitment, is also progressing well, with almost 5000 Canberrans giving their input on preferred route options, alignment and stops in a recent consultation.
