What's On

image imageimageimageimageimage

1. First things first: There’s more bang for your buck on the northside.

Rent and house prices are generally cheaper on the northside. Who needs D4 when you’ve got D3?

2. And everyone know that Howth > Dun Laoghaire.

It’s smaller, more quaint, prettier, and has better seafood.

3. We have the best street art.

Along the Red Luas line, after it crosses the river and dappled in Smithfield and Stoneybatter, there are some gorgeous murals.

4. The cinemas on the odd-numbered side are just better.

The Savoy and Cineworld are the big daddies of Dublin picture houses, and the suburban northside locations are deadly too. And if you haven’t been to the Odeon Point Village, give it a whirl.

5. And besides, BOD is one of us.

BOD is a northside god. Sure he went to school on the southside, but he’s a Clontarf lad — and in this pic he’s getting an honorary doctorate from DCU.

6. Talking of which, DCU is great.

Dublin City University’s Glasnevin campus may be relatively new when compared with its southside peers, but it’s produced some great grads like Laura Whitmore, Matt Cooper, and Father Ted’s Ardal O’Hanlon. Oh, and Nubar’s food is still beige deliciousness.

7. Everyone knows that Barrytown rules Dublin.

20th Century Fox

Roddy Doyle set his iconic novels-turned-films The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van in a fictional town on the northside for a reason: Northsiders have soul, and major craic.

8. And that Chapter One is superior to basically all southside establishments.

Michelin star, multi-award winning, totally delicious food, and fab service. Not to mention the fact that the pre-theatre menu is €37.50 for three courses.

9. There’s not a southsider out there who’ll be able to find a better pint of Guinness than one from The Gravediggers.

Sure, The Storehouse is across the river in Dublin 8, but everyone knows that this Glasnevin establishment pulls incredible pints of the black stuff.

10. There’s no denying that Tamangos is where the gang goes.

Local night clubs FTW.

11. Or that McGowan’s in Phibsborough is a great spot.

Cheap drinks, special nights, live music, and good pub food mean you’ll rarely have a bad night out in McGowan’s.

12. And Beshoff’s is an absolute northside classic.

From the O’Connell Street chipper to the restaurant in Howth, Beshoff’s scampi is simply the best.

13. Talking of classics, pretty much everyone got the wear at least once in Barcode.

The most hilarious night club ever. RIP.

14. But it’s not only our drinking spots that win; our shops beat southside’s too. Maureen’s is a Stoneybatter institution.

One of the most infamous shopkeepers in the city (hey, she was featured in The Guardian), everyone in the vicinity of Dublin 7 knows Maureen and her Stoneybatter newsagents.

15. And Capel Street is a treasure trove of randomness.

Great pubs, the best gay bar in the city, sex shops, tool shops, and lovely grub.

16. Arnotts is undoubtedly the city’s greatest department store.

Brown Thomas is fabulous, but Arnotts has that nice mix of high end and high street. Oh, and it currently has a make-your-own Magnum pop-up in the window. YAAAAS.

17. Actually, Henry St kicks Grafton St’s ass in general.

Better shops, better sights, better atmosphere, and more to do. D1 4eva.

18. Moore Street is where it’s at for fruit, veg, and meat.

Thanks to its proximity to the nearby fruit wholesale market, the salt of the earth traders on the iconic Dublin 1 street have the fresh stuff. If veg isn’t your thing, the original FX Buckley’s butchers is based here too.

19. Talbot Street is a vintage shopfront paradise.

Like a land time forgot, this is the place to go to Instagram old cobblers, wig shops, and to pay a visit to the legendary Guineys just up the road.

20. But most importantly, the original (and best) Penneys lives on DNS.

All hail Mary Street.

21. We’re closer to Ikea on the northside.

You may not need any more furniture, but when you pop down for a couple of shelves you inevitably spend €200. It’s scarily easy to access when you live nearby.

22. And Clery’s Clock will be a meeting spot for ever.

The store may have closed (crysies), but north siders (and Dubs in general) won’t stop arranging to meet under the iconic O’Connell Street landmark.

23. We have some excellent date spots.

From the beautiful Botanic Gardens to Dublin Zoo and even Glasnevin Cemetery, there are stunning spots on the northside that are great first date material, and just dying to be Instagrammed.

24. Like The Cobblestone.

The pub on Smithfield Square has musicians playing pretty much all the time; they just rock up and whip out their instruments for a spontaneous session. Perfect if you’re after a good trad sesh.

25. And Malahide Castle is an awesome dog walking spot.

Look how pretty it is!

26. And besides, all the best celebs are all northsiders.

U2, Samantha Mumba, half of Westlife (the ones who are Dubs), Boyzone, Glen Hansard, Colin Farrell, Luke Kelly, Gavin James…

Face it: Life’s just better on Dublin’s northside.
