The Melbourne Writers Festival is set to return in 2019 a jam-packed program of events from August 30-September 8. For more than three decades, the two-week festival has brought together the best writers, thinkers and performers from Australia and around the world to revel in the power of words to unite and inspire.
After a day of vibrant storytelling, conversation and discussion, visitors can find their next perfect read at the unique bookshops.
The award-winning independent bookstore Readings has been a Carlton fixture since being established in 1968. Closing at 11pm most nights make it perfect for night owls or an post dinner browse. With its central location on Queens street All Star Comics prides itself in being a haven for lovers of comics and graphic novels. For those that prefer a drink in hand when browsing through bookshelves look no further than Buck Mulligans. Located in Northcote, a 20 minute drive from the city, this quaint establishment pays homage to its Irish roots as a bookstore in Galway. Despite their specialty being whiskey, Buck Mulligans also offers customers cocktails, beer, wine as well as Irish inspired foods. Nestled on the third floor of Curtain House in Melbourne’s city centre, the trek up to Metropolis is well worth the effort. Metropolis rewards customers with an extensive collection of books, from design and arts history reads to identifying Australian flora and quirky non-fiction novels.
