Today we welcomed the women’s national teams from the West Indies and Pakistan to Canberra ahead of their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup match at Manuka Oval on Wednesday.

The West Indies and Pakistan – two very proud cricketing nations – join teams from Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa and Thailand for five matches in Canberra over a three-day festival of cricket from 26 to 28 February.

I encourage Canberra’s sport loving community to show their support for all participating teams in what is a historic cricket event on two fronts. It represents the first opportunity for Australia to play host to a T20 World Cup and we are also seeing the women’s and men’s competitions being staged as standalone events in the same year and same country for the first time.

This is a great occasion to celebrate gender equality in sport and provides a perfect platform to showcase world-class women’s sporting talent from across the globe.

Canberra’s matches at the Women’s T20 World Cup will feature two double-headers on Wednesday 26 February and Friday 28 February.

The Australian women’s cricket team – as defending T20 World Cup Champions – will be taking on Bangladesh in a night game on Thursday 27 February. Organisers are hoping this match will set an attendance record for a women’s sporting fixture in Canberra, and I’m sure the chance to see the likes of Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning in action will draw a big crowd to Manuka Oval.

This prestigious international sporting event will help put a spotlight on Canberra through a global broadcast, and it will also wrap up a big summer of cricket for our city – where we have seen Manuka Oval play host to the PM’s XI, women’s and men’s T20 International Series matches, along with women’s and men’s Big Bash League matches.
